African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, “It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can’t catch a break.”
What I’m voting for
This is how I’ll be voting this election.
- President– Barack Obama
- Proposition 1A (High Speed Rail)– Yes
- Proposition 2 (Animal Confinement Standards)– Yes
- Proposition 8 (Gay Marriage Ban)– No
- Measure R (LA Transportation funding Sales Tax Increase)– Yes
And after I vote, I’d like to pick up my free Krispy Kreme donut and Starbucks coffee, though it may not be legal here in California.
Fix Disc Errors on an old Playstation 2
Dealing with PlayStation 2 disc read errors– I used this guide to fix a broken Playstation 2 and it works like a charm now.
Automatic FTP uploads and downloads using BAT scripts
How to automate FTP uploads from the Windows Command Line – This BAT script uses the FTP command in the command line and automating the actions into a script. The script can then be paired with other processes (like Scheduled Tasks) to create an automated FTP process.
I'm going to DrupalCampLA 2008
So I didn’t make it Wordcamp this year, but instead, I’m going to a local conference for my second favorite content management system, Drupal. Drupal Camp LA is going to be big this year, with a new venue at the Los Angeles Convention Center. That is very impressive for a community open-source project. I’m currently using Drupal for an internal Urban League project and plan on using for a couple of other web sites.
Los Angeles Urban League Blogs
My latest social media projects for the Los Angeles Urban League have been two blogs. One is targeted to adults who want to follow news about the Los Angeles Urban League. The other is a youth-orientated blog for the Youth Center. I’m currently not writing them, but rather helping with the build out and features of the blog. This is the easiest way to move the agency in a more 21st century direction.
I've changed OpenID plugins; Enabled Gravatars.
My Photos of Napa and Sergey featured
Even though I’m not a professional photographer, a couple of my photos were used in a couple of publications recently:
- Openroad.tv is using my photo of the Napa River for their Napa River Adventures guide.
- Schmap put my picture of Mumm Winery on their Napa Valley map (Update (7/7/08): Now it works on iPhone too).
- My photo with Sergey Brin was used by The Park Record newspaper of Park City, Utah for a feature called 6 Degrees of Park City.
Los Angeles Urban League Event Board
In a similar vain to the Job Board I built for the LA Urban League, I created an event board using WordPress. The main plugins I’ve used are the Event Calendar for the event information and the Geopress plugin for locations.
We Can Do This Video
So the Los Angeles Urban League, my employer, put together a celebratory video called “We Can Do This.” If it seems familiar, it’s probably because it resembles the Will.I.Am “Yes We Can Video“. They then showed this video at the big event called the Whitney Young Dinner last week. I was also asked to be in the video, though my part is only about a second (from the 2:36 mark). You may however recognize some of the people who have bigger parts in the video.
